Viewing slides:
You can select a slide for viewing by clicking on a collection name or
All Slides to the left. You can also click on the names of the Most
Popular slides to see which ones other people are visiting.
Once you open a slide you are presented with a large viewing area with
some main components:
- The slide itself. You can double click to zoom in, click and drag
to pan. You can also use the slider on the left and the arrow buttons
to navigate the image and zoom in/out. We use Google maps and the
controls the same way their regular maps do.
- The mini-map in the lower-left corner stays zoomed out and
centered
on the same spot as your main big map. You can turn it on/off by
clicking Toggle Mini-map in the upper right.
- The Link-to-view button allows you to save or share links to a
specific image. It remembers just where you were on the slide and your
zoom level, etc. When you click it you will see the link that you can
then copy and paste into email, ALEX, etc.
- The large box to the right contains any markers that faculty or
students have created and Slide Chat. These are both covered separately
below. You can hide this box by clicking Toggle Sidebar.
Slide Chat:
Ever wondered how cool it would be to chat about
microscopic images with neat synced-up views? Wonder no more. Slide
Chat lets students and faculty post messages about a slide instant
messaging style. When you type your message and click the Send button,
a link is automatically included that captures your current exact view
(zoom, center-point, etc). When others read your message and click the
link, they will see exactly what you were looking at when you typed it.
Faculty messages are highlighted by a purple bar. Slide Chat only shows
the recent messages for the particular image you are looking at. Only
people logged in through ALEX can post to or see Slide Chat.
Markers:
Markers are pins on the map with titles and
descriptions. Faculty and students can create markers. Markers are
contained within groups. When you show or hide a list of markers by
clicking [Show] or [Hide] next to the group name, the corresponding
pins will
be shown/hidden on the image. Clicking on a marker will center
the map on it and zoom you to the appropriate level.
Adding Markers:
Depending on your role, you can add markers by
clicking the +Dot and/or +Circle beneath a group. When you click this a
marker is placed in the center of the image. If you click and drag that
marker you can move it to wherever you want. Only the person who
created the marker can reposition it in this way. To edit the title and
text of the marker, click on it. A tabbed balloon will pop up- click
the edit tab to change the content. Only the marker creator can do
this. When ALEX users are logged in, they will see your name when they
click on your marker - non ALEX users will not. To delete a marker,
click the (Del) link next to it in the list on the right.
Collections:
Currently only faculty members can create
collections. To do so, click the 'Add a new collection' link on the
left side of the home page and enter a name. To manage the contents of
the collection, click the edit link next to the collections name. You
can add and remove slides from the collection by clicking the blue
add/remove links. Note that it is possible to add a slide to a
collection more than once. To reorder your slides, use the Move Up/Move
Down links.
